Uncertainty Reduction Theory

Students,

I have created a digital story for you guys to view. We have studied the Uncertainty Reduction Theory which is a major component of why we perceive people to be the way we perceive them. Please review the Uncertainty Reduction Theory on page 177 of your textbook and then watch this digital story. This digital story takes you through a scenario of a certain character trying to reduce his uncertainty about attending college.

For this assignment, I would like you to identify the passive, active, and interactive strategies that Uncle Si uses in order to reduce his uncertainty about attending college. Please answer the questions below and you may turn in your answers on the day of exam two in order to receive one extra credit point. Please answer each question with a full paragraph. Do not just type a sentence and think that will sufficient enough for full credit, because it will not be.

  1. Describe the Uncertainty Reduction Theory. Give other examples other than the example in the digital story that you have used the Uncertainty Reduction Theory in your life.
  2. Describe some passive strategies that Uncle Si used in order to reduce his uncertainty about attending college.
  3. Describe some active strategies that Uncle Si used in order to reduce his uncertainty about attending college.
  4. Describe some interactive strategies that Uncle Si used in order to reduce his uncertainty about attending college.
  5. Create your own reflection on the Uncertainty Reduction Theory. Do you think that this can be applied to many areas of our lives or not?

Lastly, your Persuasive Speech Outline is just an outline of the information that you will cover during your persuasive speech. It is the department’s mission to make certain that you are not plagiarizing on any of the content that you use for this class, whether the content is outlines or papers. This is the reason why we use turnitin.com. You will follow the steps listed in the tutorial and print the originality report. MAKE SURE THAT YOU DO NOT PRINT THE DIGITAL RECEIPT!!! I DO NOT NEED TO SEE THE DIGITAL RECEIPT!!! Rationale for Studying Communication Studies

Listen to the below podcast. In this podcast, I discuss the many ways that communication can help you in your day-to-day life. The podcast begins by stating that we are constantly being surrounded by communication and offers other incentives as to why you should want to learn the art of communicating. You are to listen to the podcast and identify ways that this course (communication 1310) can help you in your future. This podcast serves as an informative audio piece to get you to reflect on your own lives. There is a list of questions below that you have to answer in order to earn extra credit points.

  1. Do you feel that this class will help you in the future? How and why?
  2. The podcast mentions that this class can improve your relationships. How do you see this class helping you with future relationships? Why?
  3. The podcast mentions that this class can improve your health. How do you see this class helping you with improving your health? Why?
  4. The podcast mentions that this class can help you to obtain a job. How do you see this class helping you with obtaining a job after you finish at Texas State?
  5. What are some other ways that you feel that communication can help you in your day-to-day life? (You must answer this question to receive extra credit.)

Self-Fulfilling Prophecy

Self-fulfilling prophecies are a major part of our everyday lives. A self-fulfilling prophecy is the idea that what you believe about yourself often comes true because you expect it to come true. A very common self-fulfilling prophecy is that students often believe that they will fail an exam before taking the exam, and they often fail the exam because of their already existing expectations. There are many more examples of self-fulfilling prophecies that take place in our every day lives. Another example of a self-fulfilling prophecy is if a new cook decides to cook some friends a meal, she already has an expectation that her dish will not turn out, this expectation, in turn could leave to the disappointment of her dish not turning out because of her already existing expectations. Self-fulfilling prophecies could also lead to positive results. If you expect that you will do well on an exam, you may study extra hard because of your expectation that you will do well, which in turn, leads to a positive grade on your exam. Below, I have attached a comical e-card that really describes the self-fulfilling prophecy. I think this is really funny because how many times do you read on Facebook, “Today is going to suck!”? This could be due to your friends busy day, but this will potentially turn into a self-fulfilling prophecy because he or she already expects that his or her day will be bad based on an expectation that he or she has! Self-Awareness

Self-awareness is a very interesting subject to learn about! In order to help you learn more about self-awareness and how we communicate. I am attaching a figure that shows Abraham Maslow’s framework that suggests that people operate at one of the four levels. Please be sure to read the below descriptions of each level of Maslow’s framework. I will give you an example of each of these steps. For the purpose of these examples we will refer to a gentleman named Uncle Si. Uncle Si will be used in each of the levels of self-awareness. During the first level Uncle Si does not know how to talk to another person without being inappropriate and he does not realize that he says “Hey!” and “Jack” constantly when he is talking to other people (level 1). One day, when Uncle Si was at work, he was trying to help a customer with how a duck call functions and he said “Hey Jack! You need to blow in the opposite end of that duck call!” The customer was very disgruntled and contacted Willy (the CEO of the company that Uncle Si works for), Willy was so upset with Uncle Si’s behavior that he sent him to a communication course for Uncle Si to learn how to be a better communicator. Now Uncle Si knows of his communication incompetencies, but still communicates in the same manner (level 2). During the course, Uncle Si worked very hard to perfect his communication with himself and others. Now he is aware of his communication incompetencies, and he is trying hard to fix them (level 3). Uncle Si returns to his job making duck calls and now when he answers the phone and helps customers with the duck calls he is unaware of how great his communication behaviors are. He is an excellent communicator now without being cognizant of that fact (level 4).

Perception Process

I believe that this model/figure will help you guys out with learning the perception process. Remember that the perception process is a three step process.  The first stage is Attention and Selection. The second stage is organization. The third and final stage of the perception process is interpretation. All of these stages overlap, which is why I believe that this is an excellent figure that depicts just that. We have studied how the Attention and Selection stage involves the arousal of one or more of the senses. For example, you hear a baby cry so you select that to pay attention to. The second stage of organization involves assigning familiarity and unfamiliarity to the things that we perceive and the final stage involves assigning meaning to what we perceive based on our own personal experiences. I want you guys to note that the first step on the figure “Select” also includes “Attention”, other than that I believe that this is a great resource to use when studying for your upcoming exam!
